Chapter 21

Nancy was already at the table in the kitchen when I came downstairs. “Did you sleep?” I said, knowing I hadn’t closed my eyes through most of the night for more than a handful of minutes.

She looked up from her bowl of cereal and shrugged. “A little.”

Maggie and Raymond had both offered to stay and keep an eye on the house so Nancy would feel safe.

But Nancy insisted she was fine.

I wasn’t sure she was.

She had the Boston Globe in front of her. “How many of Lily’s friends have you actually talked to?” she said.

I walked to the coffee maker and poured myself a coffee. “Most of her friends are back in New York,” I said.

“How do you know she’s not there? Maybe staying with a friend?”

I pulled up a chair across from her. “As far as I knew, Lily hadn’t kept in touch with most of them. And she was so focused on her career once she moved to Boston, she didn’t really have many friends here. I hate to say it, but…”

“Don’t you have to find her?” she said. “Not only to make sure she’s all right, but see if she can help you?”

“Help me in what way?”

Nancy shrugged. “Maybe there’s something she hasn’t told you. Maybe she knows there’s more to what happened to Michael, then—”

“I think I’m at a point where I’m ready to let the police do their job.” I didn’t know what else to tell her. But after another restless night, I realized I was only putting my life, and Nancy’s, of course, in danger.

She said, “What are you saying? You’re just going to walk away?”

I looked around the kitchen. It was clean. Cleaner than it had been in a while. “Whoever was here was probably trying to scare me off.”

“And you’re going to let them scare you off?”

I let out a sigh and leaned back in my chair. I felt defeated, more than I had in a long time.

“Listen, Nance. I just need you to be safe. And the truth is, I need to get my business moving again.” I looked down into my coffee. “I didn’t want to get into this with you, but I haven’t had a lot of work lately. It’s been months since I had a real client.”

She held her spoon in her hand over the bowl of cereal but placed it down on the table. “Months?”

I nodded. “The work I’ve had, it’s barely enough to pay the bills. And the more time I spend on what happened to Michael, and where Lily’s gone, the harder it’s going to be for me.” I stared back at her across the table. “If I don’t come up with some paying clients, I’m not sure how I’m going to pay your tuition for the fall semester.”

Nancy swallowed hard, then looked down into her bowl. “I can get a job,” she said, looking up at me. “I can pay for college myself.”

“You think you’re going to make eight grand waiting tables?” I shook my head.
